Fed: US says our firms can chase Iraqi contracts: Vaile
CANBERRA, April 6 AAP - The United States has assured the federal government that Australiancompanies can compete for sub-contracting work in Iraq, Trade Minister Mark Vaile saidtoday.
Mr Vaile said rehabilitation projects would initially be contracted to American firms.
But up to half the funding through the US Agency for International Development (USAID)will be spent on sub-contractors, including those from other countries.
Austrade was already exchanging information with American companies with USAID contractsand with Australian companies interested in sub-contracting.
Mr Vaile said Australia could make a significant contribution to humanitarian reliefand reconstruction.
"Australia has a great deal of relevant expertise in relief and reconstruction, particularlyin agribusiness, sanitation and water supply, but also in construction, infrastructureand institutional development," he said.
