FED: National approach to arrest beach drownings launched

SYDNEY, Jan 15 AAP - A national approach to arrest the alarming number of drownings on
Australian beaches would be underway in a matter of days, federal Sports Minister Jackie Kelly
said today.

All state sports ministers had agreed to attend a water safety conference as a matter of
priority and a date for the proposal would be locked in early next week, she said.

The announcement followed an emergency phone summit in Sydney this afternoon in the wake of
32 surf drownings Australia-wide this summer.
